Christ Humbled Himself - Philippians 2:1-18

Paul exhorted the Philippian church to be unified. As children of God, recipients of His redemption and grace, they were to act like it. Paul wrote this to them because they were doing the exact opposite. They were acting out of selfish desires (v. 3) and not as people who have had their lives transformed by Christ’s salvation. While exhorting them in how they should act, he gives them an example. Act how Christ would act.

While Jesus Christ did not come only to give us an example of how to live, his life on earth does help us figure out how we should act. Paul explains: Jesus is God! If anyone has a right to do whatever he wants, it is God. In fact, God is the only one who has that right. Paul reminds them that the Almighty, the Creator of the Universe, humbled Himself (vs. 5-11). If God – who is the God – can lower Himself so greatly, how much more should we – who are not God – lower ourselves?

Thoughts to Ponder
Throughout the previous four days we have looked at passages which describe Christ’s humble attitude. This is how we are called to act. This is difficult. It goes against everything that comes natural. Our sinful nature does not desire humility. We must constantly fight against this. Pray and ask God to show you areas of your life where you have not acted humbly. In those areas pray that God will help you to learn from Christ’s behavior and to develop an attitude of humility.
